3rd Grade - Thanksgiving 11/2013 - What is Thanksgiving?

What is Thanksgiving? Do you know where the holiday came from? Do you know some of the myths of thanksgiving?

For me Thanksgiving is about remembering how we got to where we are. Remembering those who came before us to help us get where we are. It is a chance to get together with family and friends and think about our history as well as look to the future. And honestly, for me, it's also a little bit about football. Eating and watching football has always been a big part of Thanksgiving in my family. We have a football tradition, every year we play the "Turkey Bowl". The Turkey Bowl is a 1 hour touch-football game where we split the family into 2 teams and play before we eat. It's all in fun, and it works up an appetite.

Your assignment:

  • What does Thanksgiving mean to you?
  • Why do you think we celebrate it?
  • How do you celebrate it?
  • What are your family's traditions?

Post your answers to these questions, in full and complete sentences, as a comment to this blog post. Comment as "Name/URL" and use your first name and last initial (proper capitalization, no URL)- please respond in full and complete sentences - double check your work before posting your comment.

To me Thanksgiving is a holiday where we celebrate how we came to America. I think we celebrate Thanksgiving to remember the native americans and pilgrims friendship at the first Thanksgiving feast. You can also tell from its name that its also about giving thanks. Sometimes my family goes to a friends house. I know a tradition that everybody who celebrates Thanksgiving does, eat roast turkey!

To me Thanksgiving is a day that gives you a chance to say what you are thankful for and to think how lucky we are. I celebrate Thanksgiving because it represents what the Pilgrims did when they were thankful to the Native Americans who helped them settle. Our family celebrates by having a feast and each bringing our favorite dish. I always make pumpkin pie. Our number 1 tradition is celebrating at our cousins house, but this year they are on a trip. So, this year we will go to a different cousin's house in New Jersey. We celebrate with my mom's side of our family with lots of relatives and food.

What does Thanksgiving mean to me?
To me Thanksgiving is about being thankful. Being thankful for where we live. The Pilgrims, and the Native Americans; and I gotta say, we have to be thankful for Turkeys. It's all in the story of Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims came to Plymouth and the native americans helped them settle in. Then they had a big thanksgiving feast. And that is how our home began.
Why do I think we celebrate it?
I think we celebrate Thanksgiving because , one, to bring back the memories of how we got our home. Number two, to spend time with the ones we love. Thanksgiving can also remind us to be thankful.
How do I celebrate it?
My family celebrates Thanksgiving by having dinner. Turkey, potatoes, dressing, gravy, and biscuits. Then dad puts on the T.V and we watch football.
What are my family traditions?
We always invite family and friends. But besides that, we usually do each Thanksgiving differently. So we don't really have Thanksgiving traditions.

Happy Thanksgiving!

To me Thanksgiving is a time to think of what you are thankful for and to enjoy what life has for you. When I hear the word Thanksgiving I think of turkey, pumkin pie and being happy for the stuff you have. The holiday came from when the pilgrims came to America. The pilgrims wanted to be thankful for the food they had so the pilgrims and Native Americans had a feast.

Thanksgiving is about the pilgrims that came to America on a ship called the Mayflower. For me I bake pies on thanksgiving, an apple pie and a pumpkin pie.
My favorite is the pumpkin pie. I celebrate Thanksgiving at my aunts house. I celebrate Thanksgiving with my grandparents my aunts and my uncles. And that is how I celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving to me is thanking God for providing food and shelter for me and my family. It also means eating the food God has provided for us. On Thanksgiving my entire family comes over. We play games, we talk, we eat and we pray. Before my family comes over my mom and dad and grandma cook food and family members bring food to share. Sometimes I help them cook.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that shared throughout the United Sates. The pilgrims came over from the old world to the new world and shared a meal with the Indians who were already settled here.
I don't know the myths of Thanksgiving.

Usually my family and I celebrate it by first we go to my dad's side of the family then my mom's. One of our traditions is each person gets assigned their own dish to make. Also this year we started to decorate the tree early because my aunt isn't going to be here for Xmas.

• What does Thanksgiving mean to you?
o A time for family to be together
o A time to eat a lot
o A time to help and be thankful for the good stuff in life
o Four days off from school!

• Why do you think we celebrate it?
o Because of the Pilgrim settlers and they invited the Massasoit Native American tribe to a feast.
o And because Thanksgiving was actually almost lost and Sarah Hale sent letters to about 7 U.S. Presidents and Abraham finally said “yes.” He thought it might bring some happiness during the difficult times of the Civil War.

• How do you celebrate it?
o We celebrate it by going to my grandparents (“Abuelo and Abuela”) in Pawling, N.Y., and eating a lot of turkey and stuff. And sometimes we have gone to my Uncle Rich’s house, or even hosted it ourselves.
o My Mom, Dad, Sister, and I make food, but mostly we make desserts. This year we made Pumpkin Cheesecake, Apple Cranberry Pie, and mini Pecan Pies.

• What are your family's traditions?
o My sister and I, when we are done eating a lot of Turkey, we go under the Table, take shoes off our guests, and mix them up. Sometime we put napkin in the shoes. It’s pretty hilarious to see everybody’s reaction, but some people seem to like it.
o When we host it, we put a little place setting that says something you should be grateful for. And then we go around the table and everyone reads their saying.
o Every year my Dad toasts something and this year he toasted that he was sorry his Uncle Jack was in the hospital and wasn’t able to make it, but he was grateful that he and his two brothers were together for the first Thanksgiving in 30 years.

Thanksgiving is celebrated because in 1620 the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and once they got settled in ( finally after lots of deaths, disease, and burying corn seed with fish) they invited the Native Americans over for a feast and they gave thanks for their new home. That's how Thanksgiving became a national tradition.

To me, Thanksgiving means seeing relatives I have not seen in a long time.
My family also has "FAKESgiving" a few weeks before Thanksgiving because our extended family lives in other states and cannot travel on Thanksgiving, which is a fun tradition that we started. Another tradition is that someone always makes the food that my mother's grandmother made. She was Ukranian and she always made a few Ukranian dishes such as stuffed cabbage and pirogues. We also have Italian pasta dishes to celebrate our Italian heritage as well.

Thanksgiving means to me about my family and all the stuff they did for me like taking care of me and giving birth to me and gave me water and paid a lot of money to send me to school. I think we celebrate it so we can say what were thankful for to your family and friends and have sort of like a harvest with our great loving family and eat lots of turkey and squash and spend time with your family. I celebrate thanksgiving by having either my moms mom or my dads mom and dad this year my dads mom and dad came over but my moms dad came instead of both of them my moms cousins came she has 4 but instead one of her cousins didn't come her name is Melissa. my moms dad had her sister who came her name is Barbra (mom of the 4 teenagers)and her husband Bruce came we usually go out to brunch together. My family tradition is having my grandparents over sometimes we eat dinner at my house if we do than we set up a huge table from the closet and carry it in the living room we have a bunch of chairs around the table my mom makes salad and turkey squash and a lot more yummy and delicious amazing food she's a great cook sometimes I help her cook her specialty. what thanksgiving is about being thankful for what you have thanks is about thanking people for what they gave to you giving is about giving something to someone not a want a need a want is something that you want but you don't need it to make you live for example video games that's a want not a need a need is something to make you live for example water or food and other stuff like that all together equals thanks and giving that's why they call it thanksgiving because you should be thankful for what you have. Thanksgiving came from the pilgrims and the native americans because the pilgrims forced the native americans into slavery and killed all of them but Squanto who was brave enough to help them to become a better person after he helped them they had a feast and invited a lot of people they called it harvest day it wasn't long before they started calling it thanksgiving that's were the holiday came from.

She cooked a big dinner and my cousin Isabela and I made appetizers. Before we ate my mom said a prayer about how thankful we are. We all ate lots of food and had FUN!!!
A myth about Thanksgiving is that they did not have turkey, mashed potatoes or cranberry sauce at the first feast. They most likely ate duck, venison, seafood, cabbage and squash. The feast lasted for at least a week. It wasn’t just one day.

To me Thanksgiving means sitting down to have some food and sharing and having some fun. I think we have Thanksgiving to come together as one and share. Every year we do something different but most of the time it is just me my mom and my dad. After eating turkey we sit down and watch a movie. This is Thanksgiving to me.

I go to Milwaukee two of my cousins live there, they're brothers and two don't they're sister and brother. I stay in my grandpa and nonna's house in the morning my nonna makes french breakfast puffs thats how I celebrate Thanksgiving.

To me thanksgiving is a nice holiday because I get to see my cousins i don't usually get to see. It's a time for a family reunion. We always see my cousins from my grandfathers side. We play together and eat a big meal. We all get together at my grandparents house and celebrate the holiday.

My Thanksgiving family tradition is usually getting together with family and friends and sharing the day with them. This year my mom came up with a new tradition (a Thanksgiving tree). We were going to my cousin's house so a lot of people there can put on a leaf what they are thankful for.

Thanksgiving means a lot to me because I get to see a lot of my family that I do not usually get to see.

We celebrate Thanksgiving because we are really thankful for a lot of things.

Sometimes we celebrate Thanksgiving away at other peoples houses and sometimes we celebrate at home.

To me, Thanksgiving is a time where we are thankful for people who brought us here and had a feast and we still do it today. We celebrate it because people came to this land and started to form a country. We always go to our cousins' house in Baltimore but this Thanksgiving was our last one at their house because they are moving to Scotland. Almost always, my cousins and I watch the Thanksgiving football game. And I always play ball outside with one of their very active dogs.

To me, Thanksgiving means spending time with my family and eating lots of food. It also means sharing what we are all Thankful for. For me, it's my new baby sister.
I think we celebrate because we are thankful for the Native Americans helping the Pilgrims settle in America.
My family celebrates every year by watching the parade and having my whole family over for a big feast that my mom cooks. We also watch football. It's so much fun.

To me, Thanksgiving means that we appreciate the things we have.
I think we celebrate it to make sure we remember to be thankful for what we have.
My family celebrates Thanksgiving by going to a friend's house for dinner and we bring them pumpkin pie and Mac & Cheese.
We always go to the same house and we always bring the same food.

To me Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to the Indians for helping the pilgrims settle in to America were we now live. One tradition I have is watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. Every Thanksgiving my family and I go to my cousin’s house. But this year we spent it with my dad’s side of the family. One question I have is why is it a tradition to eat turkey on Thanksgiving?

BanjoS said...

Thanksgiving means giving thanks to everyone, especially my friends and family. We celebrate it because people incorrectly think that the Native Americans had the first Thanksgiving. We celebrate by going to my grandma's house and pigging out and playing with my cousin. This year, we got presents and lit the menorah because it was Thanksgivukah

Everybody has different point of view of what Thanksgiving is. But to me Thanksgiving is where our families get together and say what they are thankful for like clothes, shelter, and most importantly, family. Not all people do this, but it is an American tradition is to cook a turkey for everybody to enjoy. I love Thanksgiving.

I see Thanksgiving as something that reminds me of all the things that mean something to me. Thanksgiving is a time to feast on good food and to think about things you're thankful for. I celebrate Thanksgiving with my grandparents. Thanksgiving is a time for my family to be lazy.(But usually I'm bouncing of the walls.)I am the only one active in my house.

Thanksgiving means that I have a big feast and that I am thankful for my family, friends, and my good health.

We celebrate Thanksgiving because we are very thankful to the Native Americans for saving the PIlgrims from dying from starvation.

I celebrate Thanksgiving by going to Maryland to my grandparents house. My grandparents hold a big feast. We eat at the feast and my other grandparents carve the turkey. Then everybody there eats the turkey. and we hang out and talk to each other.

Brian.K said...

On Thanksgiving I made turkey with my dad. Almost all of my cousins came and it was really crowed in my house. It was almost like what the Native Americans because "the whole family" was there to "eat".

To me, Thanksgiving means that I watch the parade and stare at the TV, but then I go to my aunt's and uncle's house and party, and eat turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. But my question is: why do we eat the things we eat?

JosieS said...

Our traditions are to eat mashed potatoes, have something sweet thats pumpkin flavored (pumpkin cheese cake, pumpkin pie) and to join friends or family. We usually decorate gingerbread houses around that time (even though it's a Christmas thing) and I usually think about 10 things (or more) that were thankful for.

Even though we don't have many traditions, we still have a happy Thanksgiving!

To me thanksgiving is a fun celebration where you eat tons of different foods and desserts. I think we celebrate it because of the way the Native Americans helped the pilgrims live, survive and land in America on a boat called the Mayflower. I celebrate Thanksgiving by going to Martin's (my uncle's) house, we watch one game of football on television. Then we eat in the kitchen (some helpers help set the kitchen). We eat turkey, asparagus, peas etc.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

To me Thanksgiving is watching football and spending time with my family. This year my mom cook the best Thanksgiving feast I have ever ate and we give thanks to God for all he as giving us. Thanksgiving is celebrated when the Native and the Pilgrims made a feast to celebrate their friendship and peace. We really don't have any family tradition when I was young and living in Miami we used to go visit my aunt in NC then we move to PA and spend it with grandma before she die now we just spend it at home us four Dad, Mom, little Sister Jessica and Me...

To me Thanksgiving means to be thankful for what we have. I am thankful for food, clean water, family and my house. My family tradition for Thanksgiving is going on trips to different countries with my family. The reason for this is that my mom is a flight attendant and usually has to work on Thanksgiving so we go with her! BUT...this year we went to our cousins! I was so excited because I didn't want to go away this year. We had mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and TURKEY!!
Thanksgiving is about the Pilgrims coming to America and being welcomed by the native Indians. The Pilgrims were thankful for their new freedom, a new home, and that they were welcomed by the Indians. That is what Thanksgiving is all about to me!

We celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey and being thankful for one another. My traditions of what I celebrate are Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.

To me Thanksgiving means to be thankful for our family.I think the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving is because it is an American tradition and a time to celebrate with family and loved ones. How my family celebrates Thanksgiving is we have cornbread, a really big turkey and then we say prayer before we eat. Our family traditions are to watch a movie and watch football.

I think that Thanksgiving is a time when family and friends come together to eat and remember the first Thanksgiving and remember we are more fortunate than others. My favorite parts about Thanksgiving are eating mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing and dessert (1). hanging out with siblings (2) and three, I like that my grandfather we call "Ranger". Unfortunately, i threw up the morning before and on the 5 hour drive to Washington D.C. i really enjoy Thanksgiving and hope my family has a good one in 2014.

To my family, Thanksgiving means, well, family. We go over to a relatives house to spend Thanksgiving. Sometimes relatives come over to our house.
We celebrate Thanksgiving to give thanks. We give thanks to God; to the fact that we are not poor; to family; to pets; and to friends.
My family celebrates Thanksgiving by going to a nearby relatives, and sometimes a bit farther.
My family does not have any family traditions, except perhaps eating a lot.

Thanksgiving is my third favorite holiday because I get to eat cranberry sauce, turkey and lots of desserts. I think Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for everything you have. For Thanksgiving I usually go to a family friend's house where there are lots of adults and teenagers. There's no one my age at the party but there's a girl three years younger than me and I usually play with her. I love Thanksgiving.

To me thanksgiving means being with your family. On thanksgiving, I went with my mom and my brother to a giant feast to serve food and drinks at my mom's work. I got to hand out muffins and my brother got to serve juice to about 400 people. At my mom's work, not everybody there has a family so I felt like I was part of their family. Then, we went to a friend's house and had a big feast!

I think we celebrate it to remember how thankful the Pilgrims were when the Native Americans helped them settle by showing them how to live there and how to cook food or harvest food.

I celebrate it by going to my Grandma's house. In my Grandma's house is my grandma, grandpa, uncles, aunts, and family friends. Sometimes we go to the other side of my family's house in New Jersey on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Our traditions are to go to two feast, one on Thursday and one on Friday. At my grandmas house we eat turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, brussel sprouts. My mom and dad bring cranberry sauce, a side dish and cornbread. My grandparents make the rest. Football is on TV and I am not allowed to watch what I want so I usually skateboard out in the front. In New Jersey I mostly play with the kids there.

To me Thanksgiving is a day to remember America's history. To remember the Pilgrims and the Native Americans and the smell of nice tasting food. It also means to me to spend time with my family. I think we celebrate Thanksgiving because it represents the history of the turkey and also America. On Thanksgiving either I go to my family's house or my family comes to my house, it is very fun both ways. I love the food on Thanksgiving, it's always filling. The last couple of years we've done volunteer work at a soup kitchen.

Thanksgiving means a lot to me. It's sort of self-explanitory, it means you give thanks. It means being thankful that I am not poor, I have a home, and I have everything I need. I am thankful that I have a home, and I have everything that I need.

I think we celebrate Thanksgiving because we should be thankful that (hopefully) all of you that are reading this (and a lot more people) have what they need. And to be thankful that we are not out on the street or one of those poor people. I am thankful that I am not one of those poor people.

We celebrate Thanksgiving in almost the same way every year. All different people from my family and beyond come over to my grandparents' house in upstate New York. They make turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing, and lots more. I am thankful that we have all this stuff to spare.

My family has lots of traditions. We like to make the cranberry sauce nice and tangy, not too sweet, not too sour. We also like to (well, it's the first time we made it like this) make gravy from flour, I think turkey juice, and pepper. It tastes good on the dressing.

To me Thanksgiving is a holiday that is shared with my family, while we have a feast, and play together. It is originally from when the Pilgrams and Native Americans shared a meal together to celebrate the harvest. The holiday reminds us to be thankful. As a tradition, my family always eats pie, and plays games (like Charades) until late at night.

To me, Thanksgiving is when the Pilrgms and the American Indians held a feast because they were thankful to God for letting them live. Soe foods that we eat are: turkey, squash, pumpkin pie, etc. In the pilrgm times they ate: eel, clams, etc.(they didn't eat turkey!)

Thanksgiving means to be thankful and giving. There are lots of homeless people so we have to be thankful to have lots of food to eat.
I think we celebrate Thanksgiving to share our love with our family and friends. Also to show how we care about each other. Some people have to travel to other states to their family and friends during Thanksgiving. That shows that they are a caring and loving family.
I celebrate Thanksgiving by going to my grandmas house. This year we invited new family members. Their names were Grace and Osefat.
For a treat we made sugar cookies after dinner. The feast was really good, really good. I even helped mix the batter for the sugar cookies and shred the cheese for the mac & cheese.
My tradition is always changing. Sometimes I go to my grandmas and sometimes she comes to our house. So it's never the same thing. Last year we made stuffing. This time we did not make stuffing. The sweets always change too. Last year we made chocolate pound cake and this year we made sugar cookies. I love Thanksgiving.
